Yesterday, the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors visited the White House in Washington, D.C. to meet with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Warriors superstar Stephen Curry arrived in a crisp blue suit and wore a hardcore stainless steel sports watch with a steel bracelet.

His appearance at the White House came less than 24 hours after he put my beloved Washington Wizards over the top 127-118 (sadly for me). Now, I’ve written a lot about the intersection of basketball and horology on Hodinkee. We’ve had a fair share of players appear on Talking Watches, from three-point shooter (and podcast guru) JJ Redick to Curry’s teammate Andre Iguodala.
When it comes to players and their watch choices, I often notice that their tastes seem to lean toward precious metals or very high-end. Unless we’re talking about Klay Thompson and his extensive Tissot collection (of which he is a proud brand ambassador), we rarely see what some would consider a “pedestrian” steel tool watch. Yes, by NBA standards, the Rolex Deepsea is a bit pedestrian.
In the NBA, there is one watch that appears on the wrists of the world’s best basketball players more than any other. The Rolex Day-Date. In this piece, we’ll explore this idea and see who has been spotted wearing this horological icon.
The Deepsea is one of Rolex’s oldest modern divers, dating back to 2008 (when Curry was still firing the Trident at Davidson College), and one that was updated this year at Watches & Wonders. Until last November, the 44mm size used to be the largest Rolex you could buy. That’s when Crown saw fit to outdo itself by introducing the Titanium (RLX) Deepsea Challenge, which is an incredible 50 mm in diameter and water resistant to 11,000 meters. Honestly, I feel a little sorry for Cory for not wearing that watch.
He has a history with his Shamrock though. We saw him wear it back in 2015 when he won his first NBA Most Valuable Player award. So obviously, it’s something that means a lot to him, and we like that.
Rolex Deepsea

Curry is a known watch lover and giver, and in 2021 effortwatches, after breaking the all-time record for three-pointers, he gave watches engraved with Rolex to his teammates Draymond Green, and Iguodala. I can only assume that Thompson respectfully declined the offer. Only a Tissot fits the man.
While wearing his 44mm Deepsea watch yesterday, Curry and the rest of the Warriors presented Biden and Harris with special commemorative jerseys. And before that, he and head coach Steve Kerr visited the White House briefing room, where they attended a special briefing. The table got a proper tour of the president’s official residence.
